The future of criminal justice in Kazakhstan was discussed in Astana
Astana - On October 4, 2018, an international conference was held in Astana on the theme “The future of criminal justice in Kazakhstan: from humanization to change management”, dedicated to the results of the three-year project of the European Union “Improving Criminal Justice in Kazakhstan” (EUCJ).
The purpose of the conference is an expert discussion of the results of the EUCJ project, a discussion of the further development strategy of the courts, prosecutors and police. The main speakers were the Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan Zhakip Asanov, the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kalmukhanbet Kasymov, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan Marat Akhmetzhanov and the strategic head of the EUCJ project Bill Meizer. The moderators were the Deputy Executive Director of the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy Igor Rogov and the operational head of the EUCJ project, Saule Mektepbayeva. The event was also attended by top leaders and supervising officials of the Parliament, the Presidential Administration, the Supreme Court, the General Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as key partners of the EUCJ project, heads of embassies and international organizations.
The goal of the EUCJ project, which has been implemented since 2015, is to assist the Government of Kazakhstan in carrying out criminal justice reforms in accordance with international standards. “The EUCJ project fulfilled all obligations to its Kazakh partners - the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Academy of Law Enforcement Agencies and the Kostanay Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In search of the best development models for the project, we helped partners implement the methodology and system for effective change management without imposing their point of view. EUCJ is the first project to offer partners their expert support in the area of institutional change with the support of the European Union, ”said EUCJ’s strategic project manager Bill Mather.
